Bears linebacker Roquan Smith requests a trade
The new Chicago front office's relationship with one of its finest defenders has probably come to an end. Roquan Smith, a linebacker for the Chicago Bears, has asked to be traded.
Smith has been requesting a new contract from the Bears as he enters the final year of his rookie deal. The linebacker claims that "since April, I've been trying to get something done that's fair, but their focus has been on attempting to take advantage of me" in a statement that was published on social media.
Smith also makes mention of Chicago's illustrious defensive past. "During the last four years of walking these hallways, you could sense the spirit and the pressure to live up to that illustrious history and magnificent legacy. To play like Wilbur Marshall, Singletary, Briggs, Urlacher, and Butkus was my childhood fantasy.
Smith has made 524 total tackles throughout his four years in Chicago, in addition to 14 sacks and five interceptions. The previous two seasons, he started each game for the Bears, and last year, his total of 163 tackles set a new career high.
Roquan Smith, a linebacker for the Chicago Bears, has formally asked for a trade, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.
Since the start of training camp, Smith, who is about to reach the final year of his rookie deal, has been embroiled in a contract dispute. Smith has been on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list since the beginning of training camp.
Smith wrote in the lengthy message that follows that he had lost faith in the company as a result of their attempts to take advantage of him during contract talks. Furthermore, he believes that they have pushed him into a "take it or leave it" agreement rather than engaging in any real negotiation.
Despite the fact that "the new front office regime doesn't value me here," Smith underlined his desire to complete his career in Chicago.
The offer Smith got, Smith remarked, would be detrimental to both himself and the linebacker market as a whole. He has been attempting to reach a fair agreement since April.
However, there might be hope. The McCaskey family and Smith have not yet spoken.
I don't now see a way to return to the company I genuinely love, but maybe they can save this.
